”ABC; The Metamorphic Code:”
In the analysis of identity, an individual can be thought of as being subject to the collection of various aspects, such as place, ethnicity, language, nationality and history. As a being neither entirely of one origin, the interest in the boundaries of cultural identity fascinates me. Drawn by the 16th-20th century trading of fur and Chinese porcelain to and from North America, ABC; The Metamorphic Code, questions the viewer of our growing trend towards global diversity in a society homogenized by European origins. The foundations of a set of rules, like letters, develop new meaning over time coming to express what already is and could potentially be.

”Journey to the West."
In the 16th century Chinese novel, Journey to the West, one of the main characters, Bai Longma (a White Dragon Prince), was about to be executed for committing a sin when the figure, Guanyin, appeared and saved the dragon prince’s life. As consequence the dragon prince was sentenced to a life in servitude functioning as the horse to the monk, Tang Sanzang. The silkscreen print attempts to juxtapose this inherent strength and dual identify of Bai Longma - on the one hand a mighty Dragon Prince while simultaneously now in the form of a horse. This juxtaposed imagery is in sense the metaphorical allegory of the Chinese-Canadian identify, neither entirely one or the other but rather both.
